Demonstrations
Over the years
I have been asked to do a number of blacksmith
demonstrations. These have ranged
from Scouts to Medieval Faires and Historical
Events as well as Technical Blacksmithing
Demonstrations for blacksmith groups.
Depending on the nature of the event I have
several types of equipment and costumes
appropriate from the viking age to modern age.
The art of Blacksmithing
is one of the few demonstrations that hold a
crowd of people's attention for an extended
period of time. The combination of fire , the
motion, and the noise makes an excellent crowd
pleaser. I also include educational elements
in the demonstrations to keep the adults
interested.
Few people
realize that the blacksmith was "the hardware
store" of the 1800's. Modern society and
technology have its roots in what the
blacksmith could produce and we should not
forget this humble start.
Due to teaching work load at
my home shop I am now limiting
demonstrations to only teaching
blacksmithing in well set up shops. This
means I would need the the use of gas or
coal forge, anvil, vise, preferably a power
hammer although not necessary but preferred.
I am willing to bring limited hand specialty
tools as the demonstration requires. I am no
longer moving a small shop for
demonstrations.
In 1996 I was honoured with role
of Folk Artist In Residence at
Joseph Schneider Haus Museum , in
Kitchener Ontario. Part of this role
was a series of public
demonstrations held at the museum.
